The basic contract is 2 years. After the 2nd year the owner then has topper rights. This means that the player is available for auction. All owners bid on them except the topper owner. When bidding is over the topper owner has the option to beat the high bid by $1. This allows an owner to keep the player if he wants, but also forces him to pay a premium. Player turnover is greatly increased and you don't have to worry about long term contracts and penalties for releasing players. Personally, I think it is the best method, although I could see where some people might like a 3 year base contract, so that they are rewarded a little more for successful bargain hunting.
