It's not even close. Advantage: Prior. Prior vs. Schmidt? Schmidt's slightly lower ERA (about 0.2 less than Prior) is not sufficient defense against Prior's baudy strikeout numbers (26 more than Schmidt). Advantage: Prior. Prior vs. Gagne? You might have me here. Gagne's numbers this year simply blow away Eckersley's 1992 season in every category. Even with the translation from Eck's AL stats to Gagne's NL record in 2003, Gagne still comes out ahead. My Conclusion: in 2003, Prior was the best STARTING pitcher in the NL. But I have to agree that if Eckersley got the Cy, then Gagne really ought to as well. -MR
