Re: Vail vs. Courchevel?

If you haven't already made plans, as a a former Vail/Beaver Creek ski
instructor, I can't say too many nice things about the area, however,
having recently spent two weeks in the Trois Vallees, I would
definitely urge you to go to France. Keep in mind that Courchevel is
just one area within the mega-complex of the 3 Vallees: Courchevel,
Meribel, Val-Thorens/Les Menuires. The skiing is beyond belief: if you
took every ski area in Utah and Colorado and put them together, the
combined ski acreage would still be less than the 3 Vallees. Vail and
Beaver Creek combined are roughly 7,000 lift served acres. The 3
Vallees is 10 times larger at over 70,000 acres. There is plenty of
night life, although the villages are well spread out throughout the
region (assuming you have any energy left after skiing). If you find
that the 3 Vallees is at all lacking, you are only a couple of hours
drive from another mega ski complex, Tignes/Val d'Isere. Snow
conditions in January are problematic both in Europe and the US. Vail
can guarantee skiing on the front side by extensive snow making, but
that doesn't mean the back bowls will be in prime shape. The same
applies to the 3 Vallees. All the areas have elaborate snow making
systems. By all means, go to France. You will have an experience you
will talk about for years. You can check out conditions throughout the
3 Vallees by going to this website
http://petermoser.com/webcams/TroisVallees.htm that displays scenes
from as many as 100 webcams situated throughout the 3 Vallees.
