It might help if you can tell us the make and model of your ski,
its length and your weight

No to kick wax, with practice and tuition you should be able to
make the 'fishscale' part work for you.

However the essence of our skiing is the glide. 
You can improve that by glide waxing the smooth part before 
and after the 'fishscale' part.
A Google search on previous posts on rec.skiing.nordic should
give you links to waxing methods on the web.
