Buying used would be false economy, especially by getting an older
dual frequency model. The new single (international) frequency models
do far better.

There are the traditional analog style ones and the newer digital ones
available out there. Both are good, but the methods for using them are
different. Matching the type his ski buddies have is probably simpler.

Remember that your avvy tranceiver is useless in an emergency, unless
there are other skiers nearby who know what they are doing, and have
transceivers and shovels.

Mags like Coulior and Backcountry Skiing have reviews of various
models.

If you are not sure of the details, a gift certificate to a shop shich
wells several types might be better.

Signing him up for a basic avalanche course is another option.

Happy trails,
