Had to share with you, I shot my first whistle rocket today and was
stunned by the performance. I used Passfire's instructions for
everything except substituting potassium benzoate for sodium
salycylate. I used 3/4 inch tubes pressed with three inches of fuel.
A one inch core made with a 1/8 inch brass spindal. The drift is a
hardwood dowel as is the base. The ripping noise was terrific, the
speed incredible, and an altitude of 1/4 mile was possible. The burn
time was five seconds or so. I saw the burnout and the sound of this
took between one and two seconds to reach me, thus the 1/4 mile
estimate. I am simply dumfounded at the energy of whistle mix and it
has my utmost respect. Also loved the red fire and thick white smoke. Tomorrow titanium. Now I'm wondering how much these rockets can lift,
a three inch charcoal shell?
