I guess you'll find this is just a case of Brits abbreviating
different things from Americans, so they're unfamiliar. Americans talk
of army vets, condos, utes (is that how you spell it?), etc, all of
which are pretty weird to British ears. To you, that just goes to
demonstrate the inferiority of British ears, I expect :-)
