No problem, we do it all the time, carrying on two Gitzo's in a single tripod
bag as our "personal item", with two good sized LowePro PhotoTrekkers for our
gear.

I asked this same question and the TSA guys said so long as it didn't have any
sharp edges they were OK with it.

Phoenix, Colorado Springs, Denver, Anchorage, Tampa, Newark, Houston, Portland
(Maine), Seattle, San Jose del Cabo (Mexico), Guanajuato (Mexico), and Juneau
are ones that I can remember off the top of my head.
