The GR1 (any model) is a great camera and rugged. Don't know how any P&S will
stand up under sandy conditions, but the GR1 has gone to the South Pole and on
many mountain expeditions. 

A cheaper alternative would be the Olympus Stylus Epic. A great camera with a
fine f/2.8 lens for only $89.00. You could take two at that price.

Not sure which Yashica you are referring to . The T4 Super is no longer
manufactured, but is great if you can find one. It's weatherproof like the
Epic.
