Most people try to put the flowers on top of the man's lapel and then also pin them on the top. Just place the boutinerre (sp?) on top of the lapel, hold it in place with your left hand, turn the lapel over and insert the pin on the back side of the lapel and right through the body, stem parts of the flower, typically carnations.
