One of the prize winners is Hal Stoelzle (Rocky Mountain News). He's been a photojournalist all his life (started in the Navy when he was a teen-ager). He's sixty years-old now and he's still a great photographer. I was on staff with him at another publication thirty years ago. When I saw Hal last summer he said that they use strictly digital at that paper and have for a few years. But just to be sure, I will ask him about the images in question.
