There are places that board pets.  Yeah, they keep them in cages, but I 
think they let them out for exercise.  I don't think there's any way to 
avoid a cage unless you leave them at home or at somebody else's home.

Will a family member, co-worker, friend or neighbor just take them for a 
couple months?  If you pay for all the food, kitty litter, etc, and 
maybe an extra $20 bucks a week for their trouble.  Somebody who likes 
cats would probably do it for such a small payment, or maybe no payment 
at all.

If nothing else, you could just ask the neighbor to check on them every 
2 - 3 days.  Fill the food and water bowls, change the litter, make sure 
they're not getting sick, etc.  In fact, this is a good way to teach a 
kid about responsibility.  I remember doing this for a neighor for about 
a month, when I was about 10 years old.  I didn't get paid squat; my 
"payment" was getting to play with the neighbor's cat a lot.
