According to NBC5 tv news:

When they arrived in Greensboro, N.C., the cat in the cargo hold was dead. "They brought him out in his kennel, and they sat him down next to us, and he
was dead," Stano said. "He had been dead awhile. He was really stiff, and he
was really cold. It was horrible," Stano said.

A few years ago, a baggage handler realized that he put a dog in an unheated cargo
hold, and the airline pilot made an emergency landing so the dog could be removed
from it. There are heated cargo holds where animals should go. Which means that
someone at delta placed this cat in the wrong hold.
