I'm sure Old George appreciates all you've done for him. He may have more years
left than you think. Has your vet recommended any arthiritis drugs for him?
There are some new treatments available for animals that help a lot.
As you say, he's eating better now than he ever has so it isn't really worth it
to get overly picky about it. 
Have you thought about getting him a kitten? Maybe a young girlfriend to
snuggle with?
