It seems to me that the policy of 'euthenizing', oops
I meant killing a cat after a few days is barbaric. Cats
that are picked up should be photographed, their
pictures put on a website and posted outside of the
shelter so that people can easily find them, and maybe
a poster should be put up in the neighborhood where
it was picked up.

All incoming strays (held for a full seven days) to our shelter are photographed, given revolution, tested for FIV/Felv, given a basic health exam, vaccinated for URI/calici, checked for microchips. The photos are

put

on the website. We don't have the manpower to send people into a city of
250,000 people to put up posters on every stray cat. Then add in that

we're

a -county- shelter, not just a city shelter.

Other posters have gotten the right of it. The owner is ultimately
responsible to find their wandering cat. We do what we can. We have a book
for people who come in or call with descriptions of their missing pets,

and

we call them if we have a potential match. But it isn't our responsibility
to post pictures on every door for people too lazy or irresponsible to

look

at the website or drive over.

As for the cats that are euthanized in our shelter? Bite cases. Severely
ill. Aggressive. Unclaimed cats testing positive for FIV or Felv (though
there are sanctuaries with which we may work in the future for the healthy
positives). But it's no one's favorite part of the job. In fact, my boss
specifically chooses people he KNOWS will give a shit about each and every
animal put down because it should never be something we do mindlessly or
without compassion.

There wouldn't have to be photos on the posters, just some kind of indication that a cat had been picked up. It could be done while picking up the cat. Someone smarter than me could figure out a where to put the announcement. (maybe some of the people who do yard sales) It could be in big letters: CAT PICKED UP BY ANIMAL CONTROL and then have little check boxes to indicate color, size, and age.

It's illegal in most citys -- ok, at least in NYC -- to post signs on poles. In fact, I go out of my way to rip down signs. You know, OWN A COMPUTER, WORK FROM HOME, FREE MONEY FOR SPAMMING EVERYONE. That kind of thing.

I do not rip down signs of missing animals of course, but shelters
posting signs of cats would definitely not be a good idea. If my cats
ever went missing I would put up signs myself and contact the local
shelters and vets. Just common sense I would think.

No, the real problem here was that the guy must not have made clear to
the shelter folk that these were not strays, which he likely knew. And
no shelter should kill a cat in less than 24 hours. That just isn't
enough time.

Unfortunately, that's what occurs when the shelter is overflowing with cats. The mild weather has only extended the breeding season, and the local humane society now discourages people from bringing strays to their shelter because it's "the county's responsibility". So cats like Panda are the ultimate losers. I'm not saying it's right, but that's the position the shelter is in right now. I personally blame society.
