Not wanting to soak up this thread (this usenet message area is for cats you know) my mechanic said that a head gasket could be a possibility but seems to conclude that the engine is a total loss even though I was able to drive it into his shop. The car can be driven a short distance but he recommended a re-built engine or a new one as the engine at the time was overheating. Even if I got an engine from a junked Grand Am for $600 I'd still be charged at least $1000 for labor. I was also told a re-built engine would be $1800 at least and probably another $1000 for labor. Even a new engine would set me back $2000.
