IF there is a difference, the clippers used for animals may be a bit more heavy duty... I don't know what blade size you would use for a Cairn, but blade size (number) is very important to the process. For a Border Terrier, if clipping (uncommonly done), we use a #7 and a #10. I think that for a Cairn, you mainly clip neck, back and sides... and tail? So you probably only need one size. If you only clip one dog a couple of times a year, you might be able to get away with a human hair clipper. Any groomer can explain the difference... in a phone call, and MAY be able to recommend the blade size. Call an established grooming shop, not the local retail pet super-store.
