Appalachian Trail Fundraising Project - New NC Specialty License Tag

Hello - my name is Clark Wright.  In 2001, I hiked much of the AT, and for three decades before that I have enjoyed camping, hiking, climbing, and paddling in the Mountains of North Carolina.  When I returned home from the Trail in 2001, I joined the AT-L listserv.  About a year ago, a discussion on the AT-L listserve about fund-raising ideas for the AT inspired me to draft a bill authorizing a new special license plate in North Carolina, with the goal of raising funds to support trail right-of-way acquisition, maintenance and educational activities for the 300+ miles of the AT that run through NC (and on the border with TN).  With a lot of help from others, especially some of my former NC Government contacts and western NC State Senator Joe Sam Queen, a revised version of this bill was approved by the NC General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Mike Easley.

Now comes the important part where you can help.  If you own a motor vehicle in North Carolina, (or know others who might like to support the AT that do) please consider signing up to get one of these new tags!  Below is a link to the national ATC website where you can learn more details.  In order to get the first tags made in time for delivery in 2004, we must pre-sign a minimum of 300 applications by January 15, 2004!  While response has been fairly good so far, we are not yet to the magic 300 number.  You can download a copy of the one-page application form from the link contained at the ATC web site.  Here is the web address to get you there:

The final tag design remains a work in progress; we hope to select a final design within the next several weeks.  Note that you do NOT have to wait for the final tag design to sign up!  Here is a link to a web page where you can see several designed that are being considered.  Another plate design is being created by the NCSU School of Design, and I hope to be able to post that design on this same web site (see below) soon.  The first design shown (leftmost side, first row) on the web site is the one that has received the most positive feedback so far.  Here is the link:

If you are really motivated and a good graphic artist, you still can submit candidate designs via e-mail to me at my office e-mail address below.  Feel free to e-mail me directly with any questions or comments - I do not monitor the newsgroup very often, so direct e-mail to me, or at least copying me with any message posted is the best way to make sure I get your message.  Additional tag designs will be posted on the above link, as will the final design, once selected, so feel free to bookmark this link and check back every so often.  When the final tag design is selected, formal press releases will be issued and sent to major news outlets in NC.  However, if you sign up now, you will be one of the first to receive the tag, and will be guaranteed a low number (less than 300).  You also can order the tag with a pesonalized phrase as well - see the ATC website and application form for more details.

Thanks for your consideration - please feel free to forward this post to any other relevant newsgroups or e-mail listservs, or to call me with any questions or suggestions on how to promote this trail-worthy project.  Lastly, I also hope those living in other states will consider trying to use a similar specialty tag project as a fundraiser for the AT, CDT, PCT or other trail worthy projects in their area!
