Insanity is decided by an individual's inability to either:
1. Recognize the difference between "right" and "wrong" (based
on the standards of his or her culture. (McNaughten Rule).
2. Inability to control his or her actions due to "mental
disease or defect." (Durham Rule).
There are other definitions, but those are the two most common
and popular--and the others are substantially the same with minor
differences only.
