  I'm not sure I could be that cut and dried about it -- if Newman isn't rock
and roll, then what about, say, Carole King?  Newman seems one small step
removed from the Brill Building to me.  Don't be fooled by the piano-based
instrumentation and unconventional delivery (as you must not be for Carole) --
the guy did write "Mama Told Me Not to Come" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On".
