Larry Kucharz âAmbient Blue Washesâ International Audiochrome IA 35, 2002, CD New York-based musician Larry Kucharz has numerous independent recordings to his credit in the last several years. This classically-trained composer has seen a variety of shifts in popular trends come and go and is willing to adapt them to his personal work, most recently evidenced by his foray into techno (TechnoUnit 30, TechnoUnit 32, etc.). With Ambient Blue Washes he leaves the drum machines and sequencers switched off for a different yet kindred form of musical expression. The title of the CD does a good job of describing the six pieces in the collection (each named âblue wash no.1,â âblue wash no.2,â etc.) To put it most simply, each relies on keyboard produced tones that layer and overlap one another with variety achieved through interval, volume, swell, duration, etc. The overall effect ranges from the very minimalist and subdued first few tracks (no.2 is nothing more than two gently alternating tones) all the way up to the relatively melodic and densely layered nos.5 and 6. As a purveyor of musical ambience Kucharz is much less textural and atmospheric than Steve Roach, and more minimalist than many of his peers. Some may fault him for lack of richness or variety in his keyboard sounds, or for the sparseness he evokes. for me, however, this collection actually succeeds most at that level - as a study in minimalism achieved through modern keyboard and recording technology. While perhaps not for everyone, Ambient Blue Washes will be appreciated by serious ambient fans. - Paul Hightower Exposà www.expose.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- available from BACKROADS MUSIC toll free (800) 767-4748 email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] website: backroadsmusic.com also available: all ambient and techno CDâs of Larry Kucharz -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------- For Ambientrance Interview with Larry Kucharz goto: http://www.spiderbytes.com/ambientrance/intkucharz.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------- Unit 34: assorted tracks â...techno by a composer rather than a dance producer.
