Legality of copying music

Hi,

Can anybody tell me if there are legal issues from copying a track from a CD
and converting it into an MP3 format and playing it for my use only?  I own
the CD and don't want to make a profit from this recording.

There seems to be confusion in the "fair use" part of the copyright act. Can
anybody answer this?
