With 2001 drawing to a close (Happy New Year for those readers that
won't receive this until 2002!), what has characterised the music
charts in Australia over the last 52 weeks?
This year's biggest selling singles sound a bit different to what
we heard in 2000. Back in 2000, the charts were dominated with dance
and pop, with hits by Bomfunk MC's, Madonna, Bardot, 'N Sync,
Madison Avenue, Spiller and Mandy Moore amongst the biggest sellers.
In 2001, this has changed with rock making a come-back with Lifehouse,
Alien Ant Farm, Crazy Town, Nickelback, Creed and Train leading the way.
Not only was rock making a come-back on the charts, but also on radio
too, as some commercial stations that generally avoided many rock
songs started to introduce a couple of the more successful current
rock hits of this year to their playlists.
As in recent years, the top end of the biggest sellers of 2001 is
dominated by first-time chart hits. In fact, 5 of the top 10
biggest sellers of the year are debut charting hits by their
respective artists. We could almost stretch that to 6 if we
consider the debut of Dido on Eminem's "Stan" single.
There always seems to be one artist every year that sticks in your
mind when reflecting upon the last year in music. Last year, Kylie
Minogue was that performer, with the re-birth of her pop career
resulting in world-wide success and acknowledgement, assisted
by her performances at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. However, the
honours this year go to Jamaican reggae star, Shaggy. His "Hot Shot"
album was destined to be the flop of the year, however a Hawaiian radio
station got hold of the track "It Wasn't Me" from the album and
started playing it, resulting in the world-wide release of that single
as the first track off his album. "It Wasn't Me" topped the U.K.
and U.S. charts, spending 4 weeks at number one here in Australia.
The next single, "Angel", which was a hit for Merrilee Rush in 1968
but titled "Angel Of The Morning", also topped the U.K. and U.S. charts
and spent a record-breaking 8 weeks at number one here in Australia.
This resulted in Shaggy occupying the number one spot on the Australian
singles chart for a total of 12 weeks between both singles, which
is something that no-one has been able to match within the boundaries
of a particular calendar year for at least the last 15 years! And the
record-breaking doesn't stop there. On the end of year singles chart,
"It Wasn't Me" was the 2nd biggest seller of 2001, while "Angel" ended
up as the 4th biggest selling single of 2001 - both singles notched
up triple-platinum sales awards. So again, for at least the last
15 years, we have never seen one artist manage to lay claim to two of
the four biggest selling singles of the year. Even more remarkable is
that the success of those singles has not harmed sales of his "Hot
Shot" album - that album went triple-platinum and was the 6th biggest
selling album of 2001. Shaggy has one heck of a battle ahead of him
to beat the success he has had in Australia and around the world
during this year.
This year proved to be a mixed bag for some established artists.
For some, success over the last couple of years continued into
2001. Kylie Minogue followed up two chart-topping singles and one
chart-topping album in 2000 with this year's chart-topping "Can't Get
You Out Of My Head" single and her number one album, "Fever".
Last year, the first Popstars group, the 5-piece Bardot, enjoyed a
chart-topping self-titled album and a number one single titled "Poison".
Most people thought that this "manufactured" band would simply be one
hit wonders, propelled to chart success simply due to hype, publicity
and exposure. However, this theory was proved wrong. In 2001, the
band parted ways with member Katie Underwood and released two
new singles, "A.S.A.P." and "I Need Somebody". Both those singles
shot into the top 5 on the singles chart shortly after release, while
their recent top 20 album "Play It Like That" is set for even more
promotion in 2002. Destiny's Child also continued consistantly
churning out the big hits in 2001. Back in 2000, "Say My Name",
"Jumpin' Jumpin'" and "Independant Women" were all top 3 smashes.
In 2001, "Independant Women" carried over into the new year with a
number 3 position on the singles chart and the group also enjoyed
a number 7 hit with "Survivor" and a top 4 smash with "Bootylicious".
For other arists, 2001 marked a disappointing year. Macy Gray
enjoyed the 7th biggest selling album of 2000 with "Macy Gray On How
Life Is", while the first release from that album, the single "I Try",
topped the chart for 3 weeks. In 2001, her album "The ID" only
managed to end up as the 77th biggest seller of the year while the
first track off that album, "Sweet Baby", spent just two short weeks
in the top 50 weekly singles chart, peaking at a very disappointing
number 39. Britney Spears also watched her musical career wane in
Australia. She enjoyed chart-topping singles in 1999 and 2000,
but this year the best she could do was to send "I'm A Slave 4 U"
to number 7 in its release week and watch it dive right out of
the top 10 the week after. Her second single release this year,
"Overprotected", managed a peak of just number 16 - a far cry
from her last two albums from which the first two singles from
each of those went top 3.
2001 also marked the most successful year ever for some artists.
After some moderately successful singles during 1999 and 2000,
American rapper, Eminem, hit the big time when he sampled the vocals
of U.K. female performer, Dido, on his hit "Stan". "Stan" ended up
as the 6th biggest hit of 2001 while his "Marshall Mathers LP" album
was the country's 12th biggest seller. The presence of Dido on
Eminem's world-wide smash hit "Stan" also helped Dido's career.
While her "Thank-You" was never released as a single in Australia,
the popularity of that track on radio and through exposure in "Stan"
propelled her album "No Angel" to the top of the Australian charts,
accumulating 5-times platinum sales and ending up as the 2nd biggest
album of 2001. Enrique Iglesias also ended 2001 on a high. While
never being able to score a top 10 single from his many releases
during 1999 and 2000, he hit the jackpot with his recent ballad
"Hero" which climbed to number 2 on the last singles chart issued for
2001.
On a sad note, 2001 will be remembered as the year in which several
big names in the music world died in aircraft accidents. On August
25th, 22 year-old American R&B singer and movie star Aaliyah Haughton
was tragically killed in a plane crash in The Bahamas, just after
filming the video for hew new single, "Rock The Boat". Aaliyah
enjoyed top 10 success in Australia during 2000 when "Try Again"
peaked at number 8. Then, one week after Aaliyah's death, 49
year-old Graeme "Shirley" Strachan, lead singer of the Australian
group the Skyhooks, was killed while piloting a helicopter near
Brisbane. The Melbourne-based Skyhooks enjoyed phenomenal success in
the 1970s, and after disbanding in the 1980s they re-united in 1990,
putting out a greatest hits album titled "The Latest And Greatest".
One of two new tracks on that album was the single "Jukebox In Siberia"
which spent two weeks at number one during November 1990. And once
again the world was shocked by another air tragedy when on November
24th, Melanie Thornton died in a plane crash while flying between
Berlin and Zurich. Melanie Thornton was the lead vocalist in the
Euro-dance outfit La Bouche, which enjoyed phenomenal success in the
mid-1990s around the world. La Bouche's debut release in Australia,
"Be My Lover", peaked at number 2 in February 1996, with the two
follow-up singles "Sweet Dreams" and "I Love To Love" both made the
top 10 during mid-1996. While not involved in an air accident, 58
year-old George Harrison, former member of the English group The
Beatles, passed away on November 30th after losing his battle with
cancer. The band split up in 1970, however George pursued his musical
career which was highlighted in 1988 when his single "Got My Mind
Set On You" was a world-wide smash and a top 10 hit here in Australia.
In 1989, George teamed up with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and
Roy Orbison in the group The Traveling Wilburys and they enjoyed a
top 3 hit in Australia with the single "Handle With Care". And just
as recently as in 2000, The Beatles' album of past hits, titled "1",
was declared the highest selling album in Australia for that year.
In terms of radio in 2001, Melbourne welcomed its first new commercial
FM radio station for 21 years. Nova 100 began broadcasting on 100.3
from Monday 3rd December, bringing to Melbourne listeners a radical
new formula for commercial radio, less advertisements and extreme music
variety. Nova 100's presence on the airwaves is a welcome relief
for artists that struggled to get airplay on other stations as Nova
broadcasts contemporary music that spans a range of music genres.
This is wonderful news for music buyers and chart watchers as we
should hopefully see more music from new artists charting due to
increased radio airplay.
While 2000 was one amazing year in terms of the sheer activity and
debuting frenzy of singles, this year sees a significant drop in
the quantity of number one debuts (down from 8 to 3), but a rise
in the number of hits that debuted in anywhere in the top 10
(up from 28 to 36). 2001 lacked the hype surrounding potential
number one hits, however given the fact that the overall number
of top 10 debuts is up, the Australian charts are still moving
closer to the U.K. singles chart behaviour which is characterised
by high debuts close to each single's eventual peak position.

This year was another fantastic year for artists enjoying more than
one big hit. With more artists appearing on each other's recordings
and getting official title credits for it, we see rap group Nelly
feature on a record-breaking 4 of the 100 biggest selling hits of this
year - two of those featuring significant input by other artists.
Shaggy got help from other vocalists on all of his 3 contributions to
this year's hottest 100 and thus he ends up as one of four artists that
managed to send three of their singles into the end of year chart.
10 other artists scored two hits on 2001's biggest chart.

the end of year top 100 singles chart over the last few years.

This illustrates a terrible result for Australian music on our local
singles chart. With only 7 percent of the 100 biggest selling singles
of the year having Australian content, we've reached rock-bottom in
terms of successful singles. The only bright spark in all of this is
the success of Kylie Minogue. Her single, "Can't Get You Out Of My
Head" ended up as the third biggest selling single of 2001. It's been
10 years since an Australian single has ended up as one of the top 3
sellers of the year. We have to go all the way back to 1991 to find
the last time this happened, and that's when Ratcat's "Tingles" E.P.
(which included the track "That Ain't Bad") was the second highest
selling item on the singles chart for that year.
So what has caused the poor success of Australian hits on the singles
chart? Maybe very few Australian singles actually made the charts
and hence that's why so few ended up in the end of year biggest
sellers list? Well, to answer that question, let's look at how many
Australian singles made their first appearance in the weekly top 50
singles chart for every year since 1989.
-----------------------------------
Year Number of Australian singles
-----------------------------------
1989 79
1990 71
1991 72
1992 79
1993 58
1994 56
1995 54
1996 36
1997 51
1998 43
1999 42
2000 64
2001 62
-----------------------------------
2000 saw an amazing increase in Australian content in the singles
chart as compared to pervious years. In 2001, we've been able to
essentially sustain that level of local content, with the number of
Australian singles entering the top 50 in 2001 down slightly from 64
to 62.
So while the number of Australian singles charting in 2001 was of a
similar number to those in 2000, it's very clear that overall,
Australian singles that did make the top 50 this year performed fairly
poorly compared to Australian singles in 2000. In summary, we've
had essentially the same number of Australian songs make the top
50 singles chart in 2001 as compared to last year, but those Australian
singles that did make the 2001 weekly charts have charted relatively
poorly in comparison.
So how did Australian artists do overseas in 2001? In 2000, the
Sydney Olympic Games had a big impact for those artists that
performed to a world-wide audience of billions. This carried over
into 2001 as we saw Vanessa Amorosi score major hits across
Europe with "Have A Look", "Absolutely Everybody" and "Shine".
Kylie Minogue's re-entry into the world of pop music co-incided with
the 2000 Olympic Games and her highly successful world-wide hit album,
"Light Years" was released. This earned her unprecedented publicity
and acclaim which she took immediate advantage of with the release
of her "Fever" album in October this year. However, nobody could
predict what success this album would bring Kylie. The first single,
"Can't Get You Out Of My Head" made a massive impact on world-wide
charts. At one stage, an internet music chart analyser had declared
"Can't Get You Out Of My Head" was the biggest single around the
entire world for several weeks in late 2001. That single topped the
charts around the world, including Austria, Belgium, Finland, France,
Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, and the U.K. Kylie's single is being released to the
largest music market in the world, the U.S., in February 2002, so
it will be interesting to see if she can finally make it big on the
American charts once again.
2001 also saw Australian actress Nicole Kidman make an impact in the
world of music. Nicole played a leading role in Baz Luhrmann's movie
"Moulin Rouge". The movie and the soundtrack were international
successes and one of the singles to be released from the soundtrack
was a duet between Scottish actor Ewan McGregor and Australia's own
Nicole Kidman, titled "Come What May". "Come What May" was a hit in
Ireland, The Netherlands and the U.K. and showed off Nicole's
remarkable vocal talents. Recently, Nicole Kidman teamed up with
Robbie Williams for the song "Somethin' Stupid", which is a remake
of the 1967 hit which was performed by Frank and Nancy Sinatra.
"Somethin' Stupid" has spent the last 3 weeks at number one on
the U.K. charts, earning it the much coveted title of UK Christmas
Number One single for 2001. "Somethin' Stupid" is already charting
in other countries across Europe and looks like being a massive
chart hit around the world for both artists in early 2002.
Other Australian artists that have enjoyed international chart success
during 2001 include Powderfinger, Savage Garden, Nick Cave & The Bad
Seeds, Keith Urban, Human Nature, Killing Heidi, The Avalanches,
Bardot, Madison Avenue, Nikki Webster, Natalie Imbruglia, Dannii
Minogue and Aneiki.
3. T H E N U M B E R O N E S I N G L E S
This section shows all the singles that were number one in 2001 and
how much time they spent at the top of the chart. There are two
lists. One shows each week's number one single for the year. The
second list is a summary of how long each single that went to
number one spent at the top of the chart, arranged in chronological
order of when the single first made it to number one. The weeks
all add up to 52 which was the number of charts issued in 2001.
A total of 15 different singles went to number one in 2001, with an
average time spent at the top of 3.5 weeks. Compare this to 2000
when an unprecedented 20 singles topped the chart, shortening the
average stay at the top down to just 2.7 weeks. Back in 2000,
the two longest running number one singles spent just 5 weeks at the
top while 2001 saw two singles dominate the top of the chart for
8 weeks. The trend in 2001 has been for singles to spend longer at
number one as compared to 2000, which is illustrated by the fact that
2001 sees 25% less singles top the chart.
This year, we had two artists score two number one singles within
the year, which is a repeat of what happened in 2000. Shaggy topped
the singles chart with "It Wasn't Me" for 4 weeks in April and then he
enjoyed an 8 week run at number one with "Angel" during June and
July. Mya sent "Case Of The Ex" to number one in March for 3
weeks and she also featured on the Moulin Rouge movie soundtrack
hit single, "Lady Maramalade", which included the vocals of Christina
Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Pink and spent 3 weeks at number one during
May and June.
2001 saw no chart-topping singles return back to the number one spot
after falling from number one earlier. In 2000, four singles managed
to do just that, which was a record-breaking phenomenon which we
doubt will ever be beaten.

however only 8 weeks of its current stay at number one occured

(-) These singles were charting prior to 2001 and also charted into
2001.
(+) These singles featured in the last chart of 2001 and may possibly
chart into 2002.
As we can see, 28 singles that had at least some of their top 50
charting history during 2001 spent more than 20 weeks in the charts.
In 2000, only 23 singles managed chart runs that exceeded 20 weeks.
This follows the general pattern in 2001 which, when compared to
2000, sees singles topping the charts for longer periods and spending
more time in the top 50. However, 2001 was still a long way from
those days in 1999 when a whopping 44 singles spent more than 20
weeks in the chart, thus creating a fairly stable chart dominated by
a small number of singles that just wouldn't go away.
Give the fact that there were fewer number ones in 2001 and more
singles spent longer than 20 weeks in the top 50 weekly charts
as compared to 2000, one would expect that the domination of
long-running number one singles and long-charting singles would
lock many other singles out of the top 50 weekly chart altogether.
Surprisingly enough, that hasn't been the case in 2001. Sure, while
we've had some singles spectacularly dominate the chart, 2001 has
actually seen a 7 percent increase in the number of different singles
that have made the weekly top 50 chart. That means more singles than
ever enjoyed top 50 chart success, but more on that later.

This is based on single sales in 2001 within Australia. For singles
whose charting career extended back before 2001, only sales for the
2001 chart year are included when ranking them. The sales chart year
approximately spans the period from mid-December 2000 until
mid-December 2001.
Note that the weeks in the chart and highest position listed for each
single below is taken up until the chart dated 30th December 2001.
The statistics do not include the soon to be published first chart
of 2002 dated the week ending 6th January 2002, but they do include
success the single may have also had in years prior to 2001.
A minus sign, "-", preceding a single's title, indicates that the single
spent some of its top 50 charting life in 2000. A plus sign, "+",
means that the single featured in the last top 50 chart of 2001 and
thus may possibly chart into 2002.

This is based on album sales in 2001 within Australia. For albums
whose charting career extended back before 2001, only sales for the
2001 chart year are included when ranking them. The sales chart year
approximately spans the period from mid-December 2000 until
mid-December 2001.
Unfortunately I don't maintain an albums database, so I can't easily
provide detailed data for each album, like peak chart position, weeks
in the top 50, and so on.
Compared to 2000, Australian albums did poorly in the 2001 end of
year chart. Only 18 of the top 100 selling albums were from
Australian artists as compared to 28 in the previous year. In 2000,
4 of the 5 biggest selling albums had Australian origin, where just
one Australian album made it to the top 5 in the 2001 end of year
album chart.
Special mention must go to Kylie Minogue. She's managed to place two
albums in the top 20 biggest sellers of 2001. The last time this
occured was back in 1999 when Korn's "Follow The Leader" and "Issues"
both ended up in top 20 biggest selling album chart of that year.
For Kylie, at number 5 is her current album "Fever", which has already
gone 4-times platinum and was still in the top 3 in the last weekly
album chart of 2001. So expect that album to feature in the list of
the biggest sellers of 2002 in 12 months from now. Also, Kylie's
2000 release "Light Years" ends up as the 17th biggest selling
album of 2001. Also a 4-times platinum seller, "Light Years"
was released in the last quarter of 2000, went to number one, and
ended up as the 17th biggest selling album of 2000 and continued
to chart strongly into 2001.

269 different singles made their first appearance in the top 50 weekly
chart during 2001 as compared to 246 in 2000 and 213 in 1999. We also
had 51 singles that first charted in 2000 and continued to appear in
the weekly charts of 2001. Combined, this makes a grand total of 320
different singles that charted during the 52 charting weeks of 2001.
Compare this to 299 in 2000 and just 267 in 1999. So despite the
fact we have seen that in 2001 more singles spent longer periods in
the top 50 and fewer singles topped the singles chart due to these
chart toppers spending more time at the top, we have still managed
to increase the number of different singles that have made the top
50 in 2001, as compared to 2000, by over 7 percent. This has been
achieved through an increase in the number of singles that have
spent very little time in the top 50 chart. In fact, during
2001, 99 singles spent four or less weeks in the top 50, yet in
2000, there were only 74 of those singles. 2001 has seen the
gap between long and short charting singles widen quite a bit as
compared to 2000. Thus the big hits are getting bigger and the
small hits are performing worse.
Below is listed every one of the 320 singles that spent any time in
the top 50 weekly singles chart during 2001, in alphabetical order of
the artist or group name. Highest position, peak position and weeks
in the top 50 also include (if applicable) chart achievements prior
to 2001. This gives a full picture of the single's life-span in the
charts rather than imposing artificial boundaries of charting success
at the beginning and end of years. Note that the chart positions
listed do not illustrate incidents of when a single leaves the top 50
and re-enters at some later stage. It is just a list of chart positions
occupied, in chronological order, from the first to the last week the
single charted.
Note that no statistics are provided for the singles past the last
charting week of 2001 (30th December), thus the chart run of those
singles is incomplete until they leave the chart in the coming
months. Singles with incomplete chart runs as marked as "still
charting".
