1. P R E A M B L E
So what was 1999 like on the Australian singles chart? It was probably
the year of Britney Spears. While her success was dramatic and spread
world-wide, she did exceptionally well in Australia. She was the
only artist to put three singles into the top 50 of the year, with
"Baby One More Time" at number 2, "Sometimes" at number 22 and
"(You Drive Me) Crazy" at 41 - those last two being platinum selling
hits and "Baby One More Time" a triple-platinum sales achiever.
"Baby One More Time" was the biggest seller in the U.K. for 1999 and
one of the 5 biggest hits of the year in the U.S. On the albums
chart, her dominance continued, with "...Baby One More Time" selling
almost a quarter of a million copies during 1999.
1998 saw Shania Twain dominate the end of year chart with two singles
within the top 10 biggest of the year, at number 9 and 10. In 1999,
American band, The Offspring, did even better - "Pretty Fly (For A White
Guy)" was the 5th biggest hit of the year, with "Why Don't You Get A
Job?" coming in at number 9. While "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)"
was number one during December 1998, it only came in at number 16 on
the 1998 end of year chart, as most of its sales came during the 1999
charting year (mid-December 1998 to mid-December 1999).
1999 was the year for huge success by new artists. Half of the top
10 sellers of the year were debut singles for the relevant artists.
And as for existing artists, they've never had it better. Pearl Jam
first appeared on the charts back in 1992, but despite having many
top 10 hits, it took them till 1999 to score a number one and
the biggest selling single of their career in Australia, that
being the triple platinum "Last Kiss". The Offspring also enjoyed
their biggest seller this year with "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)",
despite the fact they've been charting since 1994. And Cher rejoined
the charts in a big way - her hit "Believe", the 6th biggest seller
of the year, was her first Australian number one in over 10 years.
The boy bands of the Backstreet Boys and Five continued to have huge
success in 1999, despite groups like that traditionally having a short
life-span in Australia. Five enjoyed 4 top 10 hits in 1999, adding
to their total of 2 from back 1998. The Backstreet Boys continued on
from their 3 top 10 hits in 1998 with two huge top 3 hits in 1999,
"I Want It That Way" and "Larger Than Life".
1999 also saw a few solo projects for artists that belong to groups.
Ronan Keating, from Irish group, Boyzone, took time out to record
"When You Say Nothing At All", from the soundtrack to the movie
"Notting Hill", which landed him a number 3 hit and the 15th biggest
seller of the year. Rob Thomas, lead singer from the group Matchbox 20,
joined forces with guitarist Carlos Santana to record the hit "Smooth",
which went to number 4 and ended up as the 11th biggest seller of 1999.
And what happened in 1999 to the owner of 1998's biggest selling single?
Well, Ricky Martin managed to get to number 4 with "Livin' La Vida Loca",
but it only ended up as the 21st biggest seller of 1999. His follow-up
singles, "She's All I Ever Had" and "Shake Yor Bon Bon", all did
relatively poorly.
To finish off, these artists managed to place more than one single in
1999's list of the 50 biggest sellers of the year:
Britney Spears #2 - BABY ONE MORE TIME
#22 - SOMETIMES
#41 - (YOU DRIVE ME) CRAZY
Backstreet Boys: #25 - I WANT IT THAT WAY
#26 - LARGER THAN LIFE
Jennifer Lopez #16 - IF YOU HAD MY LOVE
#32 - WAITING FOR TONIGHT
Savage Garden: #18 - THE ANIMAL SONG
#27 - I KNEW I LOVED YOU
Shania Twain: #8 - THAT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH - Shania Twain
#44 - MAN! I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN
T.L.C. #12 - NO SCRUBS
#37 - UNPRETTY
The Offspring: #5 - PRETTY FLY (FOR A WHITE GUY)
#9 - WHY DON'T YOU GET A JOB?
Vengaboys: #17 - WE LIKE TO PARTY! (THE VENGABUS)
#24 - BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!
2. A U S T R A L I A N R E C O R D I N G S
1999 will certainly be remembered as the year in which we started to
reverse the disappointing trend of the last few years in which
Australian singles experienced very poor sales and representation
on the charts. 1999 saw 7 of the 50 biggest sellers of the year
having Australian origin - the biggest amount since 1995 and almost
double of what we had back in 1998.

Now, let's look at how many Australian singles made their first
appearance in the charts during the last 11 years:
-----------------------------------
Year Number of Australian singles
-----------------------------------
1989 79
1990 72
1991 85
1992 93
1993 74
1994 58
1995 54
1996 36
1997 51
1998 43
1999 42
-----------------------------------
Despite doing well in the end of year top 50 chart, we have had the
second lowest number of Australian singles making the top 50 in 1999
for the last 11 years. Just 42 Australian singles first charted in
1999, as compared to 93 Australian singles during the hey day of 1992.
However, when you look at how many Australian singles we have got in
the top 50 end of year chart, it is evident that the few Australian
singles that did manage to chart generally did better than they have
in the last few years. It seems like a case of quality, not quantity,
for 1999.
So how did Australian singles do overseas in 1999? Not as good
as in 1998, when songs like Savage Garden's "Truly, Madly, Deeply"
and Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn" dominated charts across Europe,
the U.S. and Asia. 1999 saw new singles by Savage Garden fail to
achieve the same success they previously enjoyed on the lucrative
U.K. and U.S. charts. However, 1999 saw Tina Arena make the big time
in France with a couple of top 10 singles over there to her credit.
And the big news was the world-wide success of Baz Luhrmann's
"Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" - it went straight to number
one in the U.K. and top 10 in several other European countries. Not
bad for a song that was recorded in 1997 and that was never released
as a single in its own right locally in Australia. And as 1999 drew
to a close, Melbourne duo Madison Avenue became the newest Australian
dance sensation on the international charts. Their single "Don't Call
Be Baby" has now charted in several European countries and despite its
poor number 30 position in the U.K. recently, it is set to be re-released
over there early in 2000.
3. T H E N U M B E R O N E S I N G L E S
This lists all the singles that were number one in 1999 and how much time
they spent at the top of the chart. The singles are arranged in
chronological order of them making it to number one. The weeks all add
up to 52 which was the number of charts issued in 1999.
There were just 9 number one singles in 1999 as compared to 14 for 1998
and 12 for 1997. The small quantity of number one singles for 1999 is
due to the dominance that some singles had on the chart. Five singles
spent a massive 7 or more weeks at the top of the chart as compared to
1998 when only two singles spent 7 or more weeks at number one.
/------------------------------------------------------------------------\
3 weeks: PRETTY FLY (FOR A WHITE GUY) - The Offspring (a)
5 weeks: BELIEVE - Cher
9 weeks: BABY ONE MORE TIME - Britney Spears
7 weeks: NO SCRUBS - T.L.C.
3 weeks: KISS ME - Sixpence None The Richer
3 weeks: IF YOU HAD MY LOVE - Jennifer Lopez
7 weeks: LAST KISS - Pearl Jam
8 weeks: MAMBO NO. 5 (A LITTLE BIT OF...) - Lou Bega
7 weeks: BLUE (DA BA DEE) - Eiffel 65 (b)
\------------------------------------------------------------------------/
(a) PRETTY FLY (FOR A WHITE GUY) spent a total of 6 weeks at number one,
however it went to number one back in December 1998, so only 3 weeks
of its time at number one was spent in 1999.
(b) BLUE (DA BA DEE) has continued on at number one in the first chart of
2000, however only 7 weeks of its current stay at number one occured
during 1999.
The last time an artist managed to score two number one singles in
the same calendar year was back in 1997 when both Aqua and Savage
Garden achieved that feat. However, a number of artists and groups
did manage to come close in 1999:
The Offspring: number 1 - PRETTY FLY (FOR A WHITE GUY)
number 2 - WHY DON'T YOU GET A JOB?
Britney Spears: number 1 - BABY ONE MORE TIME
number 2 - SOMETIMES
T.L.C.: number 1 - NO SCRUBS
number 3 - UNPRETTY
4. T H E L O N G E S T R U N N I N G S I N G L E S
This lists singles which have been in the 1999 top 50 charts for more
than 20 weeks. If the single was in the charts prior to the beginning
of 1999, then weeks spent in the charts in previous years is also
included to give a full picture of the single's life-span in the charts
rather than imposing artificial boundaries of charting success at the
beginning and end of years.

(-) These singles were also charting prior to 1999 and also charted into
1999.
(+) These singles were still charting at the end of 1999. That is, they
appear in the first top 50 singles chart of 2000.
This means that 44 singles that had at least some of their top 50
charting history during 1999 spent more than 20 weeks in the charts.
In 1998, it was 38 singles, in 1997 it was 40, and back in 1996, a
very moderate 24 singles spent more than 20 weeks in the top 50.
Last year, we saw The Living End's "Second Solution / Prisoner Of
Society" single become the longest running top 50 single of the decade
with an impressive 46 weeks spent in the top 50. That single re-entered
the top 50 chart in 1999 for one week, thus making a grand total of 47
weeks it spent in the top 50.

This is based on record sales in 1999 within Australia. For singles
whose charting career extended back before 1999, only sales for the 1999
chart year are included when ranking them. This chart year approximately
spans the period from mid-December 1998 until mid-December 1999.
Note that the weeks in the chart and highest position listed for each
single below is taken up until the chart dated 26th December 1999.
Those statistics do not include the recently published first charts of
2000 dated the 2nd and 9th of January. But those statistics do include
success the single may have also had in years prior to 1999.
A minus sign, "-", preceding a single's title, indicates that the single
spent some of its top 50 charting life in 1998. A plus sign, "+", means
that the single has charted into 2000 and features in the first weekly
top 50 chart of 2000.

8. A L L C H A R T I N G 1 9 9 9 T O P 5 0 S I N G L E S
213 different singles made their first appearance in the top 50 weekly
charts during 1999, as compared 207 back in 1998. In addition to this,
one single that first charted in 1993 (Chris Isaak's "Baby Did A Bad Bad
Thing") and 53 singles that first charted in 1998 also charted within
1999. Combined, this makes a total of 267 different singles (compared
to 259 in 1998) that charted during the 52 charting weeks of 1999.
Below is listed every one of those 267 singles that spent any time in
the top 50 weekly singles chart during 1999, in alphabetical order of
the artist or group name. Highest position, peak position and weeks
in the top 50 also include (if applicable) chart achievements prior
to 1999. This gives a full picture of the single's life-span in the
charts rather than imposing artificial boundaries of charting success
at the beginning and end of years. Note that the chart positions
listed do not illustrate incidents of when a single leaves the top 50
and re-enters at some later stage. It is just a list of chart positions
occupied, in chronological order, from the first to the last week the
single charted.
Note that no statistics are provided for the singles past the last
charting week of 1999 (26th December), however singles that did chart
into 2000 are marked as such.
