Alternatives to Yamaha's QY series?

Are there any good alternatives to Yamaha's QY-series of portable MIDI
workstations? 

I'm looking for something that sounds good (and offers some flexibility
in manipulating sounds, and doesn't just have 128 hideously-cliched
synth patches), can do a good job of sequencing, and won' take up much
space. I'd rather have something without a proper keyboard, and if
possible, something that can run on batteries.
