It is not quite as you think. Those *aren't* bounces. Those
are the second form of the Swen worm, which *claims* to be a bounce, but
is actually a form of the virus designed to take advantage of one of the
security holes in Outlook Express -- that of using the "iframe" HTML tag
to *automatically* load and run the virus code. (Unless your OE is
patched to prevent it.) The other form (the one which claims to be the
security patch) depends on fooling the user into running it.
In the meanwhile, I've been hit by a "Joe job", in which a
spammer is sending out bushels of spam (lots of different flavors)
forged to look as though they come from my domain (d-and-d.com). All
kinds of alpha-numeric garbage as usernames. They're bouncing back to
here, and since the usernames are bogus, they're bouncing back to the
original bouncer. I've got one system working full time doing nothing
but handling the bounces -- with the marginal benefit that my actual
incoming spam seems to be a *lot* lower. But this suggests that I am
also missing *real* e-mail. My logfile is already up to 10.5 MB for
three days, when a normal week has only about 7 MB for a whole week --
including bouncing of tons of spam attempts.
Enjoy,
DoN.
