My favorite software synth by far is Reaktor by Native Instruments,
but it might not be good for you if you're not REALLY into synth
programming. If you are just looking for something to use with
Band-In-A-Box to generate reasonable sounding jazz accompaniments,
then you could probably do better.

But I love Reaktor because it is so powerful and re-configurable.
After a fairly steep learning curve, you can build almost anything
that you can dream up. I've used it to create synthesized big band
sounds...
