Re: no fail topic!

HA! That could be a sore subject for many. I had a Conn 8D that was a honey but it
was stolen.
:-( I had almost stopped playing after that but someone approached me about playing
some gigs
coming up and they needed someone who could handle some high horn part so they gave me
a Yamaha
YHR-662 to use. He wanted my "opinion" on how it played so I agreed to get back in to
semi shape
and played the gigs. When those ended he had some other gigs lined up. Before long
I was playing
pretty regularly and I was really surprised at the way that horn responded and
SOUNDED. I had
always thought that the yamaha horns were too sharp (from hearsay) and didn't have a
full bodied
tone. I don't know about the rest of them but that particular one was remarkable.
Well, long story
short, (or is it too late?) I became the owner of that yamaha and I still play on it.
  For the
most part I've been very happy with it. Well, up until I ran into a young lady who
happened to
have a Lawson she had purchased from someone. It was a medium bore horn and slightly
smaller than I
'thought' I would like. She let me play on it and I fell in love immediately. (not
with her, with
the horn) It's response was unbelievable! I felt like I was playing on a fiddle--so
agile, so
AGREEABLE!

I might spring for one of those if I keep playing a lot. I have played on an
Alexander and a Kruspe
in my life but I didn't like either. Both made me feel as though I was fighting the
stuffiness.
Might have just been me not being player enough for either but I personally didn't
like them. I've
never played on a Miraphone horn or a Geyer. Of course, everybody has played on a
Holton Farkas.
HA! Not my cup of tea either.

All in all, I'm probably not the player to ask about the quality of a horn. I'm
mostly just an
average player. I've played with lots of orchestras, bands and pits but nothing that
will make me
famous. :-)

What about you? I bet you own one of each of the horns I've named. <grin>
