How long should strings last?

I have had my bass guitar for about 5 years, and I have never changed the
strings.  They still sound pretty good to me.  Admittedly I don't play it
all that often, but is this a ridiculous length of time to have had a set of
strings?

How long do you all usually keep a set of strings?
