Take you son and his bass.  Have him play the amp loud.  While he is playing
adjust the all the controls and verify that you can hear them changing the
tone and that there are no intermittent spots or crackling.

The amp may have some blemishes which will not hurt anything as long as the
speakers are in good shape.  If either of the 15" speakers has a grill cover
that is a plus (metal webbing to protect speaker from puncture).  You can
pull off the fabric speaker cover and look at the speaker itself.  My TNT
had Velcro in the corners holding the fabric cover frame on if I remember
correct.

Let you ears help you make the decision.

On paper, the Peavey has more Power and the possibility of adding a second
cabinet later.  In the power range you are looking at it could make a
difference in the rock band setting particularly if the there are more than
1 guitar.

However, the Ampeg may sound better.

In good shape, either will probably be a good addition.
