I agree. A bass player I know who was starting out had a TNT and it worked very well at jams. The tone left a bit to be desired so now he has another amp, but it's still a combo and still about the same size. I've got a Laney BC 75 which I still use in small clubs. It only cost me $100 used from another bass player with a bad case of GAS who was always buying gear and selling it cheap. Laney's are good buys as are Peaveys. If you can find a Fender BXR 200 I HIGHLY recommend it. It's an older model now and perhaps you can find a used one cheap. It's my main general purpose combo. Enough power for a 5 string in most things. I like the old style controls BETTER than the new version! Not so large to schlep as to be a problem. I added a tweeter to make it brighter, but with his bass that probably isn't needed. You may also find a BXR 100 or a BXR 300. The 100 is a tad under- powered IMHO and be warned that the 300 is HEAVY! But if you find a buy either would probably work for him also. Good luck.
