I'm going to ignore the pathetic trolls and give you an answer, Greg. As with most things, you give a little and you lose a little. The simplest way to quiet down a drone reed is to shorten the tongue by pulling the bridle down towards the loose end of the tongue. BUT. This will raise the pitch, and it will also make the reed shut off very easily, if you go too far. One of the very many rules of thumb is to make the reed soft enough that you can barely blow it out (to the point of stopping) by blowing as hard as you can, but hard enough that it will not cut out wil playing normally. As to quiet reeds, I find that Rocket reeds and Selbie reeds have relatively low volume. Another factor in the volume of the drones is the drones themselves. Older pipes, such as my 1926 R.G. Lawries have wider bores than modern-made pipes, so they will tune flatter and louder than new pipes. Hope this helps, Steve IGNORE THE TROLLS "Greg Roche" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > anyone know how to quiet down the drone reeds or better still , what are > the quietest reeds....both drone and chanter??? > >
