The article's entitled - Making Gap Between Jazz and Classical Disappear. Yet another reason why jazz is no longer popular. ----------------- http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/19/arts/music/19SHIP.html Making Gap Between Jazz and Classical Disappear By JON PARELES Published: November 19, 2003 The music notation probably looks similar for compositions by the pianists Sylvie Courvoisier, a classical composer who also improvises, and Matthew Shipp, whose background is in modern jazz. Both are fond of dissonant chords and clusters that make way for skittering commotion; both use terse melodic motifs, often exploring a single interval, and both come up with complex ostinatos. Each pianist led a string trio — with violin and bass for Mr. Shipp and violin and cello for Ms. Courvoisier — at Merkin Hall on Monday night in a smart double bill that recognized the disappearing gap between modern classical music and jazz. But their trio music was as disparate as a moderated panel discussion and a street-corner preacher with an active congregation. [There's more, but you'll have to go look it up.]
