everyone's "must have" avant-garde jazz dates?

I'm rebuilding my jazz collection after a multi-decade-long hiatus. :)
I've always found I like the avant-garde stuff much more than the
straight-ahead flavors. I'm talking Miles' Panthalassa (sp?), some of
Sun Ra's stuff, maybe some of Jean-Luc Ponty's more adventuresome
voyages, Lonnie Liston Smith, and so on. (oddly enough, I do NOT enjoy
Trane's "free" stuff, sounds too much like a cat being neutered
without benefit of anaesthetic for my taste). So, given the hints to
my tastes above, can you all suggest some artists/albums I should give
a closer look to? thanks in advance to everyone.
