Is it really true that MS hasn't been tried often? Compared to what? Anyways, I attended a dhrupad recital on Sunday by the Gundechas in Bangalore where they sang a medium-length Madhmad Sarang (they started with a lovely Ahir Bhairav, then MS, a Kabir bhajan based on Charukeshi and finally Adana(!!)). They do have a recording of the same piece - "tum rab tum saaheb" set to sultaal. Kumar Gandharva has recorded MS and it is available an a Music India CD. IIRC, he has sung the same cheez sung by Basavraj according to Akash - "rang de rang de". It is probably a 15-20 min piece. Ali Ahmad Hussain's recording of Madhmad Sarang on shehnai is leisurely and outstanding (I forget the details, but there aren't a whole lot of his recordings around). Finally - and Nani may ignore this paragraph - the accomplished vocalist from Philadelphia Dr.Vivek Khadilkar sings it often. The last occassion I remember was in the presence of a small group of musicians/musiclovers in picturesque Sea Isle City and it was an excellent performance. He gives it a full treatment and the rendition may last for an hour or more. The khayal he sings is "laal hami san karo naa ThaThori" in vilambit ektaal. The cheez is "jhulanaa jhulaave ri maa_ii" in drut teentaal. C
