Folklore-Timba Connection

Is it inevitable that a deep interest in and study of timba and its musical
"principles", (for want of a better word) will lead to an interest in and
study of Cuban folkloric music?

How much of what we call timba today is based on specifically folkloric
styles, as opposed to more general salsa structure and instrumentation,
anyway?
