Is it just me, or are many examples of the vocals in salsa (and maybe Afro-Latin music generally) just as rhythmically complex and as rapping? Is there anyone who reads this, who is at least a sympathetic listener when it comes to rap, who can comment? (I don't think I can describe myself as sympathetic to it at this point.) There seems to be this idea among some hip-hop fans that because hip-hop is largely rhythmic, and has only the most minimal melodic content (not in rapping itself, but it some choruses, samples, etc. lest anyone think I am considering rapping melodic), that it therefore must be more rhythmically complex and engaging than other forms of music which are more watered down, so to speak, by things like melody and harmony. But that doesn't necessarily follow.
