You can get very mystical and esoteric in defining it, and some people really go off the deep end talking about it. Google for more references and see what you find. But in my interpretation, qi is just energy or power - in the "F=ma" sense. Perfectly real, explainable in physical/biomechanical terms, and easy to sense. Can you apply energy efficiently, focused where you want it? (i.e., if you punch me, does it hurt?) If so, then you have "good qi". But what do I know? Not much.
