# Indiana is one of the original shall-issue states, and has
# no required safety/training course. I went to the farm this
# weekend to shoot and found myself staring down the muzzle
# of a drunk 16 year-old's rifle. He was hunting and wandered
# by mistake onto our property; he and I just happened to come
# over opposite sides of the ridge at the same time and there
# just happened to be a buck behind me.
#
# It doesn't help that our property adjoins one of the biggest
# hunting spots in southern Indiana.
#
# I doubt that Indiana will implement any coure requirement
# in the near future; there is far too much opposition every
# time the topic comes up, partly because it is seen as gun
# control. Considering how many of these kids rarely touch
# a gun except for deer season, and considering what almost
# happened Saturday, I'm rethinking my position on requiring
# gun safety here. In this particular case, I doubt that it
# would have made a difference--whiskey and firearms just do
# not mix, ever--but I'm beginning to think that it would be
# a good idea.
I see. So requiring firearm safety training would then prevent stupid
16 year olds from drinking when they go hunting. A corollary I suppose
would be to require stupid hunters to go to Alcoholics Anonymous, which
would, undoubtedly, make them better hunters. Yeh! That's the ticket!
