Re: Silly Gun Stuff...

Hi,

What exactly is "the proprietary their computers or programs"?

# If you have a
#HP, Gateway, Dell, etc. you've been suckered. Compare OEM parts (which all
#the shelf bought computers have) against the RTL parts.

Not suckered. You pay $499 for a $499 computer, that most people are
happy with (in their proprietary ignorance.) If you buy a PowerEdge
server instead of a Pavillion or Dimension, you get higher-end parts.
For more money.

I *have* compared OEM parts, and not found them so much proprietary (not
since about 1990, anyway) as just more resistant to upgrading- like MBs
locked on CPU voltage of the included CPU. That's not proprietary, it is
just hard to upgrade. Ditto Micro-ATX Dell and HP systems, even if you
had room to add stuff the Power Supply can't handle it. No biggie
though, because it is still a standard form factor, you can get a bigger
MicroATX PS, or MicroATX MoBo for that matter. Not proprietary, just
limited upgradability.

Since most people would go gray even considering a motherboard upgrade,
that's OK. Me, I build my own systems. They have way more upgradability
and flexibility than anything out there (except maybe the AlienWare
systems, which BTW cost big $$$). My systems also cost more and come
with no support. That's OK with me. It's not OK with average Joe Buyer.

# Now if you would
#like an education....*how to* port scanning, etc.drop me a line.

And, what does port scanning have to do with the supposed proprietary
nature of OEM components? Answer: nothing...

Ken.
