# I haven't seen it, but I have read about it. Using an AK in that
# environment makes sense. It's shorter than a M16 and more suitable
# for use in close quarters combat. Soldiers don't have to beg Uncle
# Sam for 7.62 ammo. Ammo is available on the street.

Can't beat the price. I haven't heard a taxpayer argue with
"free-ninety-nine" for the cost of a weapons system.

# I've also read that everyone isn't issued a M16 or M4. Any rifle is
# better than no rifle!

Well said. Given a choice between a Beretta and an AK, I'll take the AK.
Actually, I'd take both, but I'm greedy that way.

# I'm starting to think I might buy an AK instead of an AR15. AKs are
# famous for their reliability. In battle I would rather have a gun
# that doesn't jam than one that needs all the TLC that an AR15 needs.
# AKs are a lot cheaper too.

Check out the Romanian AK clones. They're rough around the edges; mine
needed some "finishing" in the magazine well ("finishing" meaning "hogging
out the hole with a Dremel so that magazines would fit") but has otherwise
been very satisfactory. For the price it can't be beaten.

If you want the Cadillac of Kalashnikovs, find yourself a VEPR. Yes, they
truly are that damned good. Hint: if you're under 200 lbs., hit the weights
while you're waiting for it to arrive.

That being said, I'm not prepared to give up my AR just yet.

# Does anyone know why the US Navy Seals keep AK47s in their inventory
# even though they have the M4A1? :-)

In at least one case I can think of, it was because some Chicom AK's of the
select fire persuasion were confiscated while coming into the country and
were turned over by customs, free of charge. (As I said above, no one
argues with "free-ninety-nine.") Having strange weapons in one's inventory
doesn't necessarily mean that they're used for anything important...but they
could be.
