slug prevention in the fall

Is there anything I can do in the fall to prevent slugs in the spring
and summer?  I have a shade plant perennial garden with lots of
hostas, and the slugs seem to get worse every year.  I've tried egg
shells and various commercial poisons (which I hate to use.)
