Personally, I found the DVD playback on the PS2 to be absolutely atrocious,
not watchable at all. I compared the PS2 next to my old Panasonic DVD player
(600$ canadian new 3 yrs ago, so a good player) and the colors were bland,
very dark, the sound was tinny, just bleh. On the other hand, the xbox DVD
playback was identical to my old DVD player and thats what I use now as my
main player since I no longer have the panasonic.
