Killing DVD+RW playback, CD-R playback, and MP3 playback?

Do they not want this thing to sell?

Surely, Sony must've had more medium range drives they could've considered
for use with this system.

I have a PC Panasonic drive that handles CD-R(RW), DVD-R(RW), DVD+R(RW)  and
was only $280.
