Look at the games available for each system and decide which one has the best selection of games that seem interesting *to you*. That, ultimately, is the final criteria. All three systems have fancy schmancy graphics and quality sound. Xbox and PS2 boast the added capabilities of playing DVDs, although from what I hear this is more a novelty than a practical application. If you really want a tricked out DVD player, get an actual DVD player. If you don't ask much of DVDs other than being able to play them, and you'd particularly like to play games on the same box, go nuts. PS2 apparently is the most functional DVD player, while Xbox has more fancy tricks up its sleeve. If the simple, hands-down volume of available titles interests you, go for PS2. It plays all (or most?) PS1 titles in addition to the new games being released. Xbox has a built in hard drive so you don't *need* to buy memory cards (although you can). It also has a wide variety of First Person Shooter games, if that's your niche. (You mentioned Doom for the N64). Gamecube is my personal choice (perhaps not surprisingly in rec.games.video.nintendo). My reasons are simple enough. Nintendo has the best ongoing franchises of games (Metroid, Zelda, Mario), imo. They've also managed to license almost all of the PlayStation titles which had previously interested me (Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid). As has been said before, Gamecube contains the most number of titles that I'm interested in playing. All of the "blockbuster" games seem to be coming out for all three systems anyway, so that factors in relatively little.
