NES Adapters and Versions

Hello,

I want to do some research about Nintendo NES
Versions that are out there and adapters to use their carts on
the other systems.

As far as I know there exits a

US version called NES
a european version called NES
and a japanese version called famicom

Furthermore they have a different amount of pins.
The US and european version 72 and the Japan version 60?

Is that right?

And if so is it possible to use us games on european NES?

Or waht kind of adapter is necessary? Where to get such adapter?
