    Pretty much. If you're playing cards that gain benefits based on how
many artifacts you have, like the nims or cards with affinity, adding a few
artifact lands will give you more artifacts to take advantage of. If you
don't use cards like that, then you're quite right that basic lands are
generally the better choice since they can't be Shattered and such. Though
even then, you might want to play with them anyway... if your opponent knows
you're playing red and casts a spell to destroy all mountains, your Great
Furnaces will stay around. So non-basic lands are sometimes better and
sometimes worse than the basics.
