I think because the Doppelgänger (ä in the original) required so many rulings (http://tinyurl.com/p29b) and created many issues (they (WotC) did not want to brought up _again_, thinking of CIP effects (Great Whale, anyone?), leaving game effects, upkeep, and counters on creatures... Also, it would be a "reprint" of a banned (in Extended) card, which, as pointed out in another article, ís something WotC would not do... /Dennis
