Darklon makes another good point: as a mage, hit points should not be a worry, if you're playing him correctly. I don't even bother to buy armor for my new mages (just extra weight that could hinder them later). I equip them with a lantern (if one is available), some scrolls of phase door (for those moments when face-to-face monster contact occurs), and the Magik I spell book, then I head down below. If you're doing HTH combat with a mage, you're doing it wrong. Save the rest of your gold to buy the Magik II spell book, as you'll need it sooner than you think.
