I've been only doing this with ID (trading its 6 spell levels with Bolt
of Draining). In fact Khuth now has high enough level and spellcasting
that he can have both spells at the same time (and Bolt of Draining also
trains Conjurations). Later in the game I still wouldn't mind having an
irresistable spell (such as Bolt of Iron) available against such things
as demons.

And I did, and got the staff of death, which has proven quite helpful.
I've found that Bolt of Draining is pretty effective with it (killed an
orc knight on Mines 1 with no trouble for instance). Pain is still good
for the common orcs and other riff-raff (actually anything that doesn't
have to be dead *right now*).

We'll see, if he gets this far (this is at player level 13, right?). He
is at level 11 now.
